Unpaid Carers
Here at Wellmoor, one of our aims is to help unpaid carers find the support that they need. We’re working with carers from all walks of life, all ages and needs, to lend a hand and find ways to relieve some of the pressures of caring. Have a look below to see what we’re up to and if we can help you.
Young adult carers:
We’re working with young adult carers, hearing their stories and creating peer support groups, to ensure they feel better supported in their caring role. If you’re a carer aged 18-24, we’re setting up free support groups in Devon so you can connect with others in a similar position. Have a watch of our video with a young adult carer Ed, to hear his story and see how being a young adult carer can affect your life.
If you’re between the ages of 18-24 and want to get involved in a peer support group, get in touch with us via the contact details below.
Unpaid carer cancer awareness:
From March 2025, we’re running events with Ottery Help Scheme to give carers the opportunity to come along with their cared for person, have a break and enjoy some time connecting with other carers. These events are aiming to raise awareness of how important it is to look after your own health as a carer, and you’ll get to hear from some experts on looking out for cancer symptoms.
Carer vaccinations:
Did you know that as a carer you may be eligible for free flu vaccines? We’ve been working to raise awareness of this, and encourage carers to get their free flu vaccine to look after both themselves and their cared for person. Get in touch with your GP for more information and to book a vaccine during autumn/winter.
Fit to care:
From October 2024 until April 2025, we’re offering free 6-week programmes of physical exercise to unpaid carers. These are funded by Sport England, with options including gentle yoga, strength & balance exercises and creative movement. The classes are held in community venues in Moretonhampstead, Crediton, Exminster and Okehampton, and you’re welcome to bring your cared for person along too.
From our previous projects with unpaid carers, it became clear to us that those of you who dedicate time to care for someone else often have very little time for yourself and your wellbeing, and we want to support you in this. This project is a way of giving carers the chance to try some gentle exercise whilst also allowing them to meet others in the same position. Through this, we hope to improve the physical and mental wellbeing of every unpaid carer who attends.
